EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept dozens of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
